So often when you work in public policy, you hear about what can’t be done.  It’s easy to get caught up in the barriers, how hard something will be, and who will be against it, rather than the opportunities of change, and what is in fact possible.

To my mind, there were three striking things about the recent announcement that middle school students in Prince George’s County, Maryland—a large school district in suburban Washington, DC—will be going to school for an additional 40 minutes per day starting next school year.

Over the past five weeks, 75 teachers and administrators from schools across Massachusetts have come together for four full days to talk, think, dream - even argue a bit - about expanding learning time.

Last week, the Governor of Oregon signed HB 4014 into law. HB 4014 dealt with many important education issues including laws pertaining to school boards, kindergarten, teacher evaluation, and assessments. 

In the budget recently released by the House Ways and Means Committee, the House proposed to level-fund the MA Expanded Learning Time (ELT) Initiative at $13.9 million for fiscal year 2013. We know that the fiscal climate remains difficult and we are grateful for this show of support for the ELT Initiative and 19 expanded-time schools in nine communities across the state.
